Do you know if success on the South Beach Diet is possible if you skip the induction phase and go directly onto the 2nd phase of this diet? I have been doing LC for about a year and a half now and can't stand the thought of starting on induction again in any diet. Please advise me on what to do. Thanks...Fran

Note from MizFrog: I've read in some of the Q&As (several are on this site) where Dr. Agatston says that it's okay to go right into Phase 2. People who do that don't experience the rapid weight loss during the first two weeks, but lose at the rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week. You can combine Phase 1 and Phase 2, doing some of each. Remember, this is not a low carb diet, it's a "good" carb or "smart" carb diet. Even in Phase 1, you don't have to count carbs. Just avoid the high glycemic carbs. Eat plenty of veggies. I wish you well!

Hello, Thank you for your web site. It's wonderful. I have about 90 pounds to lose and I'm looking forward to doing this diet. One question... I didn't notice the amount of milk or yogurt to have in Phase 1. Can you please advise? Thanks Heather

From MizFrog:  It's on the Phase 1 Foods to Enjoy list, and maybe in another place or two on the site. Formerly it was 2 servings daily, but that has been upped by Dr. Agatston to 2 to 3 servings of dairy daily, dairy meaning milk and/or yogurt, not cheese. For this diet, cheese is counted as a protein, not dairy. I wish you well in your journey to good health!

Wow! I love the South Beach Diet! I lost 25 pounds last year to fit into a wedding dress that was 2 sizes too small when I first tried it on. It had buttons in the back that wouldn't close. The lady who did my alterations was ready to accept that she would somehow "fix" the dress so I could wear it open instead of buttoned. Well, we opted to hold off on the project to see if I could lose the weight I needed. Yeah! South Beach did it! I focused and used the book as my guide. Got married in July and looked great. My cholesterol was normal as was my blood values in general. My doctor said I couldn't bring the numbers down with diet. I guess I proved him wrong. I am so glad I found this site so I can get back on the wagon in 2005!! I put back on about 10 pounds but I am back in the groove with my beloved SBD!!

This is a fabulous site! Thanks very much! I used your Salmon with Rosemary recipe, but substituted dill weed for the rosemary - delicious! Also, one question - you have pinto beans listed as allowed in phase 1; everything I've read says that they are not allowed until Phase 2. Can you verify this? ~L (Atlanta, GA)

Note from MizFrog: Pinto beans and black-eyed peas are now on the Foods to Enjoy list for Phase 1 on the official South Beach Web site. There have been many changes since the original book was released. And thanks for the tip about using dill. I'll add that as a note to the recipe.

What a great resource! This is my 2nd time doing Phase I, and you remind me that I don't have to eat boringly. Just the ricotta section alone would have been a good find. Thank you. About smoothies... My favorite is a cup or so of skim milk, with a half cup or so of any frozen fruit, esp. blueberries or peaches (I freeze them in the summer), with artificial sweetener and extracts (vanilla, almond, etc.) to taste, all blended. Can also use Torani Splenda-sweetened syrups for flavors. Depending on the proportions of milk to fruit, it can be thicker, like ice cream. The key for me was investing in a VitaMix. Expensive, but I love it for smoothies. It gets rid of every chunk.

As far as beverages go, my SBD beverage of choice is the Diet Snapple Lime Green Tea. My husband and I just began our weight loss journey together and we started the South Beach diet...after 4 kids I have become insulin resistant and am 40 pounds overweight and my dr recommended south beach. I finally talked my husband into trying it with me as he needs to lose about 60 pounds. I'm getting frustrated. It's been 4 days since I started Phase 1, and not have I not lost a single ounce, but I am tired, cranky, have no energy, and light-headed at times. I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to work at all. I usually have a scrambled egg for b-fast, string cheese for snack, spinach salad with grilled chicken for lunch, cheddar cubes for a snack, then fish or steak with green beans or broccoli for dinner. I allow myself 1 diet coke every morning, but have not eaten a single food on the "bad" list, and am exercising every day. Is there something else that I'm not doing that I should be...please tell me how to make this work.

Well, after a very frustrating first week on Phase 1, I am starting to see some results in looser fitting pants. I'm not sure exactly how much I've lost because I haven't been consistent with weighing on the same scales at the same time of day, but I know it's at least 4lbs. Not what I was hoping for...but it's a start, I'll take what I can get. Hopefully all the exercise is turning some of my fat into muscle tissue which weighs more and that's why I haven't seen the numbers go down as much. I'm just happy my pants fit better. Thanks for all the tips on the website.....it keeps me going to find new and interesting things to eat that don't constitute "cheating". I went to my mom's (72 yrs) for thankgiving in 03. She looked her normal slim self. She showed me some pictures from the summer before. She was much larger. I asked how she lost the weight. South beach she said. I read the food list and thought that these were all the foods I really liked. I always thought it was important to eat a "starch" with every meal. It opened my eyes. I started 1 year ago. 50 pounds so far. 6' from 225 to 175 and stable. I even taking up biking daily. I feel so much better now. Getting in better shape is now more important than weight loss. I am thankful for your site. It's been my guide. Like they say, phase 3, or 2, is forever. But maybe from meat to tofu.

Thanks for such a fantastic resource all in one place! I've used this site often and given it out to many many people since August 2004. Within my circle of family and friends, there are over 20 of us on the SBD. Between us all we figure we were minus a "couple of people" at our last get-together. I think everyone I know that is on it agrees that it has stopped being a diet for us and become our lifestyle now. Just a note from Southern California about the new South Beach line of foods, they're all out here and all that I've tried are fantastic! Cereals, cereal bars, pizzas, lunch wraps, and frozen dinners, haven't found anything I don't like! Bravo to Kraft and Dr. A!!!

It's good to have a group that works together. That makes it easier. About those new foods, I'm not impressed with them. More about that on my site later on.

Looking for encouragement? Been on SBD for 7 weeks, have lost 22lbs and 2 dress sizes. Going to do Phase 2 for two more weeks, then do 1 week of Phase 1 to kick start loss of my final 15. Started at 166 size 14, now 144 and loose size 10. If you can stick with it, it gets easier and the results will be addictive. Good luck to all of you just starting!! Carrie in Huntsville, Alabama
